Olive Ridley Turtle Tortuga Lora

Playa Rio Oro, Costa Rica

About Me

I co-founded Nature Now International to engage youth in defending vulnerable ecosystems through community-based conservation. My upbringing in Costa Rica sensitized me to the connection between the health of the environment and natural world and people’s quality of life and right to self-determination, especially in frontline communities. I have taken a human-centered approach to my climate research and fieldwork and now work to mobilize caregivers to advocate for government pollution protections for the health of young generations. I serve as Project Manager for Moms Clean Air Force’s National Events and EcoMadres, the Latino community engagement program.

GHANA: ON FISHMONGERS AND SEA TURTLES

JANUARY 2022

As a student of Development Sociology at Cornell University, I navigated my way to the Ghanaian fishing villages for six weeks in 2022  on a scholarship just after the Covid pandemic. There, in mostly artisanal communities, I explored through interviews, photos, and videos, women’s gender- based roles and constraints in the  fishing industry. The management and practices of artisanal fisheries are deeply reflective of  the social, cultural and economic values of the communities that depend on the natural resource for their livelihoods and traditions. With the decline of artisanal fishing, I also explored the women’s perspectives on harvesting sea turtles and their eggs as an alternative economic resource, a practice that is restricted by cultural, social and religious taboos as well as by national laws.

In preparation for this fieldwork, I conducted research with my mentors,  Dr. Anthony Akunzule, Veterinarian and Executive Director of the Ghana Poultry Net,  and Andrews Agyekumhene, Oceanography Professor at the University of Ghana and renowned conservationist who established the first-ever sea turtle tagging program in Ghana.

With an interpreter, I traveled to different fishing communities, mostly artisanal, to conduct  interviews with women who are processors and/or fishmongers. Processors are responsible for preparing, preserving and sometimes cooking the raw fish brought to them by the fishermen, while the fishmongers are involved with marketing, selling and distributing the products to both domestic and international markets. While the  management and decision-making of fisheries is controlled by the fisherman and male community leaders, I was able  to capture, with my simple iphone, some of the tireless and important work of the female force in the post-harvest activities along the fisheries supply chain and demonstrate some of the obstacles and risks they face while completing their daily work. I also added to the photo essay some insights I gained from my conversations with them about their less obvious but significant role -- passing  down traditional values with their ecological and cultural knowledge of fisheries and marine life that they share through their fishwork  with their community.
